Using Breath Awareness to Heal Nervous System
Using Breath and Spiritual Awareness to Heal Nervous System
The goal is to stop repeatedly observing and monitoring things that are making your nervous system feel threatened, especially when there is nothing you need to do about them in that moment.
You may notice yourself focusing on:
* Symptoms in your body
* Environmental threats or things that might be unsafe
* The future and what might happen
* What you haven’t accomplished yet or where you think you should be
* Everything that could go wrong
* Situations you cannot control right now
The moment you notice yourself watching, checking, scanning, analyzing, or projecting into the future, use that as your signal to redirect your attention.
First, respond to the thought with an affirmation that matches what you are thinking about. Then immediately redirect your attention to your breathing.
If you are thinking about something that could harm you or something that might be unsafe:
“God is protecting me, so I don’t need to think ahead.”
Then redirect your attention to your breathing.
If you are thinking about something you need to accomplish or do in the future:
“God is working through me, so I don’t need to think ahead.”
Then redirect your attention to your breathing.
If you are thinking about or monitoring a symptom:
“God is healing me, so I don’t need to think ahead.”
Then redirect your attention to your breathing.
You can use alternate nostril breathing, or simply breathe naturally through your nose and focus closely on the feeling of the breath moving in and out.
Pay attention to the air entering your nose.
Pay attention to the air leaving your nose.
Keep bringing your attention back to that physical sensation.
Your mind will naturally try to return to the symptom, environmental concern, unfinished goal, or future possibility. That’s okay. The practice is noticing that your attention has gone back there, repeating the appropriate affirmation, and deliberately redirecting your attention to your breath again.
Think of it like this:
Notice a symptom → “God is healing me, so I don’t need to think ahead.” → Redirect to the breath.
Notice yourself scanning for something that could harm you → “God is protecting me, so I don’t need to think ahead.” → Redirect to the breath.
Notice yourself worrying about something you need to accomplish → “God is working through me, so I don’t need to think ahead.” → Redirect to the breath.
Notice yourself thinking about everything you haven’t accomplished yet → “God is working through me, so I don’t need to think ahead.” → Redirect to the breath.
Notice yourself imagining something bad happening → “God is protecting me, so I don’t need to think ahead.” → Redirect to the breath.
Notice yourself checking again → Repeat the affirmation → Redirect to the breath again.
If the thought keeps trying to come back, continue breathing in and out through your nose while repeating the appropriate affirmation.
You do not need to argue with the thought, analyze it, solve it, or figure out why it appeared.
Simply:
Notice → Affirm → Redirect → Breathe → Repeat.
Continue focusing on the breath. If the thought returns, repeat the affirmation while continuing the breathing, and bring your attention back to the physical sensation of the air moving in and out.
You are not pretending these things don’t exist or ignoring responsibilities. If something genuinely requires action, take appropriate action. But when there is nothing productive you need to do about it right now, repeatedly thinking about it does not give you more control.
Instead, come back to what is happening right now.
Return to your breathing.
God is protecting me.
God is working through me.
God is healing me.
Every time your mind returns to the thought, gently repeat the appropriate affirmation and return to the breath.
Every time you do this, you are practicing the ability to choose where your attention goes instead of allowing fear, hypervigilance, symptoms, or future-focused thinking to choose for you.
